Hang Up on Spoofing

What Is Spoofing?

Spoofing is when a caller deliberately falsifies the information transmitted to your caller ID display to disguise their identity. Scammers often use neighbor spoofing so it appears that an incoming call is coming from a local number, or spoof a number from a company or a government agency that you may already know and trust. If you answer, they use scam scripts to try to steal your money or valuable personal information, which can be used in fraudulent activity.

Watch the video to the right and visit fcc.gov/spoofing to learn more about spoofing and how to avoid being scammed.

If you think you’ve been the victim of a spoofing scam, you can file a complaint with the FCC.

How to Avoid Spoofing?

You may not be able to tell right away if an incoming call is spoofed. Be extremely careful about responding to any request for personal identifying information.

Don’t answer calls from unknown numbers. If you answer such a call, hang up immediately.

If you answer the phone and the caller – or a recording – asks you to hit a button to stop getting the calls, you should just hang up. Scammers often use this trick to identify potential targets.

Do not respond to any questions, especially those that can be answered with “Yes” or “No.”

Never give out personal information such as account numbers, Social Security numbers, mother’s maiden names, passwords or other identifying information in response to unexpected calls or if you are at all suspicious.

If you get an inquiry from someone who says they represent a company or a government agency, hang up and call the phone number on your account statement, in the phone book, or on the company’s or government agency’s website to verify the authenticity of the request. You will usually get a written statement in the mail before you get a phone call from a legitimate source, particularly if the caller is asking for a payment.

Use caution if you are being pressured for information immediately.

If you have a voice mail account with your phone service, be sure to set a password for it. Some voicemail services are preset to allow access if you call in from your own phone number. A hacker could spoof your home phone number and gain access to your voice mail if you do not set a password.

Talk to your phone company about call blocking tools and check into apps that you can download to your mobile device. The FCC allows phone companies to block robocalls by default based on reasonable analytics. More information about robocall blocking is available at fcc.gov/robocalls.

Remember to check your voicemail periodically to make sure you aren’t missing important calls and to clear out any spam calls that might fill your voicemail box to capacity.

Keeping Your Email Protected from Hackers

Keeping Your Email Protected from Hackers

Email is the most common form of web communication today, it is also the login most people use for other online account registration, for those reasons it is susceptible to hackers. If your account is hacked, that “hacker” may now have potential access to not just your email account, but other sensitive accounts as well.

To avoid being a victim of hackers here are some steps to follow in safe guarding yourself:

  • Use a strong password for your Email, and make this password, and all of your other passwords unique to just that specific login. Using the same password for all of your accounts makes all your accounts vulnerable in an instance where any of them are maliciously compromised.
  • Know who you are communicating with – Email attachments that contain malware are also popular vessels for cyber mayhem. The easiest way to avoid these scams is by not clicking the links or attachments. Instead, open another tab, and go to the website of the company in the email or link to see if the information presented matches the official source. As a general rule, never open links or download attachments from unknown senders.
  • Whether a home user or a small business owner, identifying who and what is on your network is as important as ever, as unauthorized users could be trying to hack into your system. Ensure you change the admin password for your router and set your Wi-Fi password to something really strongthat a hacker could not crack.
  • Whenever a security update is released for your operating system, update it immediately. Consider this a basic tenet of information security.

If you have questions or concerns, we are here to help. Contact our local business offices or Tech Support 24/7.

Get Discounted Phone or Internet Service with Lifeline

Get Discounted Phone or Internet Service with Lifeline

Access to affordable voice and Internet service is vital to stay connected in today’s world. People need these services to connect with healthcare providers, potential employers, educational programs, and loved ones. Affordable service remains a challenge for many low-income consumers. The federal Lifeline program helps close the gap for these consumers by offering a monthly discount of up to $9.25, or up to $34.25 for those on Tribal lands, towards a qualified household’s phone or Internet service. A household is a group of people who share income and expenses. Consumers who live with another person already receiving the Lifeline benefit may still be eligible for the discount if they do not share income and expenses with that person.

Households with income at or below 135% of the federal poverty guidelines are eligible for the Lifeline program. Consumers enrolled in a government assistance program, such as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Medicaid, Federal Public Housing, Veterans Pension or Survivor’s Benefit may qualify for Lifeline as well.

Consumers have several options to apply. They may visit the LHTC Broadband business office in their area. Consumers also have the option to submit an online application at http://www.checklifeline.org  or mail in a paper application (https://www.lifelinesupport.org/wp-content/uploads/lifeline/documents/LI_Application_NVstates.pdf) to the Lifeline Support Center.

USAC’s Lifeline Support Center serves as a resource for prospective and current Lifeline participants. Consumers may submit questions via email to LifelineSupport@usac.org, or by calling (800) 234-9473. More information is available on our website www.LifelineSupport.org.

  • Lifeline is a government assistance program
  • The benefit is non-transferrable to another person
  • Only eligible consumers may enroll
  • Lifeline is limited to one discount per household

The Lifeline Program is one of four programs administered by the Universal Service Administrative Company (USAC), under the policy guidance of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

TV Sun Outages or Sun Spots

TV Sun Outages or Sun Spots

The majority of cable television providers deliver cable signals from satellites orbiting the earth high above our homes and businesses. However, these messages from space are not without very brief, interruptions caused by sun outages, often called sun spots, but what exactly is this phenomenon?

What are Sun Outages?

Twice a year, you may experience some degree of television interference due to “sun outages.” Such outages are caused by a phenomenon called a “solar satellite interference.” These brief outages occur when the sun is in a direct line behind a satellite transmitting cable signals. When the sun is aligned with a satellite, solar radiation, an energy the sun is emitting, interferes with the satellite’s signal and thus causes a brief signal outage.

Cable TV providers are not the only ones affected by these sun outages. Pretty much anyone who relies on satellite communications are affected by sun outages. This could include certain streaming services or some internet providers that use satellites for online access.

When Do Sun Outages Happen and How Long Do They Last?

Sun Outages occur every year, in the fall and spring. Since they are a naturally-occurring phenomenon, there is no exact time or date when they will occur. However, they typically only last a few seconds or minutes in most cases. In some rare occurrences they have lasted up to ten minutes. The majority of the interruptions are very brief.

What Kind of Interference Can I Expect?

During the sun outage, customers may experience a pixelated picture, picture freezes, or audio distortions for a brief period of time. You may even see a message that says, “One Moment Please”.

You can still watch TV recordings stored on your DVR without any trouble during sun outages. Be aware, however, that programs being recorded during sun outages will likely be affected.

What Should I Do During These Interruptions?

You don’t have to do anything to restore your service but wait a few minutes for the event to end. If you have trouble with your TV service that lasts longer than a few minutes contact your local LHTC Broadband business office.
